OIE Outcomes Assessment
OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS
Outcomes Assessment:
Outcomes Assessment (OA) is the process of collecting information that will tell an institution whether the academic programs, services, activities, or experiences it provides are having the desired impact on students, faculty, administration and staff. Is the institution being effective and efficient in its daily operations?
Academic and Institutional Effectiveness Assessment:
The OIE engages in two outcomes assessment initiatives
- Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) Assessment
Student Learning Outcomes directly describe what a student is expected to learn as a result of participating in academic activities or experiences. SLO’s focus on knowledge gained, skills and abilities acquired and demonstrated, and attitudes or values changed. They may require a number of iterations before the data collected are deemed valid and reliable. - Institutional Effectiveness Assessment
IE assessment provide valuable data for academic planning, decision-making, and requests for funds during the budgeting phase of annual strategic planning. The assessment process provides information that informs the trustees about the efficiency and effectiveness of the graduate school and its departments. And, IE assessment demonstrates to MSCHE that DMGS is committed to continually improving out academic programs and student success services.
Metrics for Measuring Institutional Learning Outcomes
Following recommendations by the MSHCHE evaluation team in April 2019, the Office of Graduate Studies and Office of Institutional Effectives worked to further define our institutional learning outcomes (ILOs). Specifically, the offices worked to offer guidelines on how to measure whether a program was meeting each ILO.
