On February 4th, 2019 at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, another installment of the DMGS – Kennan Institute Distinguished Speakers Series took place. Dr. Nigel Gould-Davies, former British Foreign Service Officer, currently an Associate Fellow of Chatham House and professor at Mahidol University in Thailand and Dr. Daniel P. Ahn, a senior consulting economist for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, formerly Chief Economist at the State Department, delved into the complexities of the US sanctions that have been imposed on Russia’s elites.

On January 17th, DMGS Eurasia expert Edward Lemon spoke on a panel focusing on “Domestic and International Impacts of Kleptocracy” at the Kennan Institute in Washington DC. Dr. Lemon used the case study of Tajikistan, an impoverished post-Soviet state that has seen over half of its wealth plundered by its authoritarian regime, to illustrate how kleptocracy, or government by thieves, has important impacts on state development and national security

Igharkava concludes, “Russia is spreading fear that Georgia could lose its national identity if it moves closer towards Europe. If unchecked, these far-right attitudes have the potential to become strong wedges between Georgia and the West, paralyzing the country and instigating national security issues as impediments to Georgia’s pro-Western agenda.”
