DMGS Eurasia expert Edward Lemon has edited a book entitled Critical Approaches to Security in Central Asia, which has been published by Routledge. The book brings together 15 chapters by 19 experts from the United States, Europe, China and Central Asia. The book brings together leading specialists from a range of disciplines including geography, anthropology, sociology, and political science to discuss how citizens and governments within Central Asia think about and practice security. Topics examined in the book include terrorism, border security, water, and peacebuilding.  The geographic scope of the book ranges from the Volga region in Russia to Xinjiang province in China, Azerbaijan and post-Soviet Central Asia. Unlike many studies, which focus on security from the perspective of governments in the region, many of the contributions examine how citizens are affected by security practices and how local people understand security and harmony in their daily lives. Chapters examine how ethnic Uyghurs in China use marriage as a way to secure themselves, how LGBT communities in Kyrgyzstan cope with stigmatization and how residents of the remote Pamir mountains in Tajikistan understand harmony. The book has already been listed on George Washington University’s Voices on Central Asia’s list of the best books on Central Asia published in 2018.
