Irakli Jgharkava takes on media polarization in the country of Georgia, which he views as an “immediate threat to democracy” in his article Media Polarization: A Challenge for Georgian Democracy? published online by the Georgian Institute of Politics (GIP). Although he already holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, a Master’s degree from the Department of European Interdisciplinary Studies at the College of Europe, and a second Master’s degree in Nationalism and Ethnicity Studies from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and serves as an Affiliated Policy Analyst at GIP, Irakli is pursuing a third master’s degree [in subject?] from Daniel Morgan Graduate School of National Security.

In his article, Irakli discusses how the Georgian media has always served as an influential policy tool for the party in power. The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights’ Election Observation Mission (ODHIR EOM) to Georgia said that, “the diverse media environment is sharply polarized along political lines and business interests,” and that “television remains the primary source of political information, with online and social media being a distant second.” Irakli explains that media polarization has harmed the democratic process during Georgia’s presidential elections and dampened Georgia’s European agenda. Irakli concludes, “As a result of political pressure, the role of media is stifled in Georgia and serves the interests of few and strengths the country’s divisions and instability.” (Read the full article here)
