Irakli Jgharkava describes how Russia’s Information Warfare (IW) campaign targeting Georgia has become a threat to the country’s national security in an article published online by the Georgian Institute of Politics (GIP). Although he already holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, a Master’s degree from the Department of European Interdisciplinary Studies at the College of Europe, and a second Master’s degree in Nationalism and Ethnicity Studies from Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and serves as an Affiliated Policy Analyst at GIP, Irakli is pursuing a third master’s degree (Managing Disruption and Violence) from Daniel Morgan Graduate School of National Security.
In his article, Jgharkava discusses how Russian Information Warfare has put a damper on Georgia’s European agenda. Jgharkava writes, “Russia continues to perceive liberal Western ideals as a threat to its sphere of influence and is particularly weary of Georgia’s pro-EU, and pro-NATO stances. To safeguard Russia’s regional hegemony, the country has adopted Soviet IW tactics to distribute lies and emotional propaganda in Georgia, with a focus on the far-right and culturally sensitive issues.” He describes how Russia is conducting its campaign to distract Georgia from its Westernization process using radio, TV programs, and pamphlets, mass media, social media, and other modern platforms. Jgharkava concludes, “Russia is spreading fear that Georgia could lose its national identity if it moves closer towards Europe. If unchecked, these far-right attitudes have the potential to become strong wedges between Georgia and the West, paralyzing the country and instigating national security issues as impediments to Georgia’s pro-Western agenda.” (Read the full article here)
