National Security Lecture Series at DMGS
The Daniel Morgan Graduate School Lecture Series is specifically designed to bring together speakers with divergent opinions on national security with the goal of enabling the public to engage in robust and informed discussions. It has hosted some of the most distinguished and influential leaders, thinkers, and practitioners of the national security community. These members of the national security community have provided our students, faculty, and guests with first-rate analysis of some of the most pressing challenges of our time. Daniel Morgan Graduate School will continue to host speakers who can help prepare the next generation of leaders, scholars and, practitioners to develop actionable solutions to global and domestic security challenges.
On November 28th, Daniel Morgan Graduate School (DMGS) hosted two compelling panel discussions as part of the Polish 100 year anniversary celebrations titled “For Our Freedom and Yours.” The main aim of the conference was to bring together Polish and American decision makers, business, academia and young professionals who work every day on strengthening relations between our two nations.
At DMGS, we are afforded incredible opportunities to host distinguished and influential thinkers, leaders, and practitioners as part of our National Security Lecture Series. Our tailored Master’s Programs in Intelligence, National Security, and Regional Studies feature courses on European security issues including issues related to Russia, which affect Polish security. The For Our Freedom and Yours conference was in keeping with our goal of drawing attention to the perspectives of national security professionals and other eminent experts on the most pressing challenges faced by the international community.

“The Polish Economic Boom?” featured expert panelists discussing how Poland on one hand is becoming an economic “tiger” and on the other hand, Europe is facing institutional deadlock. Panelists discussed how they feel this dynamic will affect the region’s economy. They also discussed the role of Poland’s economy in Europe, the future of the growing US – Polish economic and trade relationship and the status of economic freedom in Poland. DMGS-Kennan Institute fellow Dr. Edward Lemon, an international relations expert who has spent almost three years working and conducting fieldwork in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Poland, moderated the first panel discussion. Panelists included Tom Cosentino, Brigadier General, US Army (Retired), Chief Operating Officer, Business Executives for National Security, and Dr. Alejandro Chafuen, Managing Director, International at the Acton Institute and member of the Advisory Board of PAFERE, the Polish – American Foundation for Economic Research and Education.
“Is the Transatlantic Community Ready for Fort Trump?” focused on whether the establishment of the divisive “Fort Trump,” which Polish President Andrzej Duda proposed during his recent visit in Washington, D.C., will affect regional security. Panelists discussed how President Donald Trump has called for the withdrawal of the US from the INF Treaty, which will affect global arms regulation and questioned how the U.S. pulling out of the INF treaty will affect the Eastern Flank of NATO. This second panel was moderated by Stephen Olejasz, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army (Retired), Executive Vice President, American Association of the Friends of Kosciuszko at West Point, and panelists included Quentin Lopinot, career diplomat in the French Foreign Service and Visiting Fellow in the Europe Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies; Thomas Spoehr, Lieutenant General, US Army (Retired), Director of the Center for National Defense The Heritage Foundation; and Glen Howard, President of the Jamestown Foundation.
Dr. Piotr Wilczek, Ambassador from Poland to the United States, was just one of the many remarkable individuals to attend the event and meet with our President Christopher Croft. A prolific literary scholar and intellectual historian with a Ph.D. from the University of Silesia, Ambassador Wilczeck has authored and edited twenty-two published monographs and more than one-hundred journal articles. He previously visited our D.C. campus in February to offer his views on how energy security issues continue to affect Poland and the wider region of Central and Eastern Europe.
