KEVIN MCCARTY, M.A.
Chairman, MDV Program; Professor of MDVKevin McCarty serves as the Chairman of the Managing Disruption and Violence (MDV) program at Daniel Morgan Graduate School.
Professor McCarty teaches students by drawing upon his detailed understanding of the persuasive communication principles, concepts, and processes needed for organizations to address potential or active threats from disruptive or violent group behavior. He seeks to give students the in-depth practical understanding, processes, and concepts needed them to become practitioners who manage and evaluate the development, implementation, and impact of persuasive strategies.
McCarty’s experience and practical knowledge is extensive and illustrious. He served under Presidents Obama and Bush at the National Security Council Staff as the Director for Global Outreach. He was responsible for the coordination across government of what was known as the “War of Ideas” to counter terrorism.
Prior to that McCarty served at the Central Intelligence Agency and as an E-2C Naval Flight Officer. His service in the Navy consisted of many carrier and detached deployments around the world, supporting many missions including no-fly zones, contingency, multi-national exercises and counter-drug operations. A TOPGUN graduate, McCarty has served as both a squadron Commanding Officer and a Joint Service Officer.
After a career in government, McCarty has taken on many roles. As an independent consultant, he continues to advise government and commercial clients on predictive strategies for audience engagement and in-depth audience understanding methods. Clients have included both Fortune 500 companies and National Security Agencies and Departments. He has also served as the staff-lead on strategy for the 2010 Congressional Independent Quadrennial Defense Review report and has published and worked on many research projects for national security.
A broad and adaptive thinker, McCarty has also worked in film and script development and production among other entertainment related projects.
Professor McCarty’s education includes a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Maine and an M.A. in National Security Studies from the U.S. Naval Command and Staff School in Newport, R.I.
